Mr Daniel Feakes, Chief of the Implementation Support Unit (ISU) of the Biological Weapons Convention
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General
The world is experiencing one of the worst pandemics ever known in human history and it is very important to investigate the origin of COVID-19 and at the same time, develop a vaccine and find a cure for this disease that is taking the lives of thousands of people across the planet.
Following up on the issues of militarization, we became aware of the US Navy military base called NAMRU-6, which conducts research on infectious diseases. At the same time, we have seen in the Peruvian press, in recent years, the growth of unknown diseases in this country, a situation that is worrying and unaccounted for.
In 2019, former Peruvian parliamentarian Richard Arce also asked the Peruvian Defense Ministry for information on the performance of the NAMRU-6 military base, and the official responses were not clear. In the current context, we cannot rule out that the unknown diseases in Peru could be due to experimentation with human beings or to the mishandling of biological or chemical material from inside the NAMRU-6 facility.
Observing the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic that supposedly could have originated in virological laboratories, we think that it is a danger that NAMRU-6 could be carrying out prohibited studies with human beings and probably for warlike purposes.
Therefore, we request that you carry out an inspection of the NAMRU-6 facilities to clarify our doubts and see if all the necessary security measures are being taken so that the experimentation of infectious diseases cannot be used against civilians and soldiers and if their operations are complying with WHO regulations and international laws.
Yours Sincerely,
